  1. Visit the VeriSign Web site. Take the guided tour of VeriSign's e-payment processing solutions (verisign.com/payment/tour/tour0.html). While at VeriSign sign-up for a digital ID that can be used with e-mail (verisign.com/products/ secureEmail.html). Use the ID to encrypt and e-mail the message.

  2. In 2000, the federal government announced the adoption of a new encryption algorithm to be used with nonsensitive information. Use the information provided at nist.gov/public_affairs/ to answer the following questions:
    1. What algorithm was selected?
    2. Who invented the algorithm?
    3. What other algorithms were tested?
    4. Why was this particular algorithm selected?
    5. How long would it take someone to break the algorithm?

  3. Go to the CheckFree Web site (checkfree.com). Run their e-billing demo. What features and functions does CheckFree provide?

  4. Run the online merchant demo at eCheck Secure (demo.echecksecure.net/merchant/). What specific information is needed to pay with an e-check? How does eCheck Secure guarantee online checks?

  5. Visit emvco.com. What do the EMV specifications have to do with smart cards?

  6. Go to the RocketCash site. What is RocketCash? What is RocketFuel? Approximately how many stores accept RocketCash? What types of stores are they and who do they cater to?

  7. ECheque is a program modeled after the U.S. Treasury Department's eCheck pilot project. In what country is the program taking place? Who is the target audience? What equipment and technologies do they need in order to make ECheque payments? Are these requirements a barrier to the use of ECheques?
